CREATING A LOGO TO STAND THE TEST OF TIME & SPACE.
As part of the House of van Schneider team, I designed the Mars 2020 logo to represent NASA's latest mission to outer space. To say that this was an absolute honor and dream project is the understatement of the century.
The logo needed to be simple and iconic. It needed to work in a variety of applications, but most importantly it needed to represent the spirit of NASA and space exploration.
The brand mark, consisting of the Perseverance rover and distant earth.
A custom wordmark that took inspiration from the classic NASA "worm" logo.
INITIAL INSPIRATION & EXPLORATIONS ↓
Example logos gathered during the research process. Many feature the use of simple geometric shapes. One of the primary requirements for this project was to ensure the logo evoked a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of past space missions and agencies. It needed to have a "throwback" feel to it.
LOGO EXPLORATIONS ↓
These are among some of the first initial explorations and logo concepts. It's clear to see where the inspiration lies for these concepts, as the thicker shapes and rounded corners are reminiscent of classic NASA logo marks.
FINAL LOGO PROGRESSION ↓
A progression of the final few logo concepts. It is clear to see the breakdown and simplification of the main visual elements: the NASA rover and distant earth. The far right example is the final conclusion.
